Refining the Operational Framework for Field Epidemiology Training Program in Sri Lanka

The Epidemiology Unit recently conducted a series of consultative workshops to refine the operational framework and strategic implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) for the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) in Sri Lanka.

A major focus of the workshops was the development of practical, context-specific case studies tailored to a three-tiered target audience—frontline, intermediate, and advanced field epidemiology trainees—supporting a transition from traditional lecture-based teaching to competency-based adult learning.

The workshops were conducted under the technical guidance of Dr. Matthew Griffith, an internationally recognized FETP expert and Module Coordinator and brought together Consultant Community Physicians, Senior Registrars, Registrars, and Medical Officers of the Epidemiology Unit, while Provincial and District Consultant Community Physicians contributed through hybrid consultation sessions.

This collaborative effort marks an important step towards strengthening and institutionalizing field epidemiology training in Sri Lanka.

Additionally, it supports the long-term vision of the Epidemiology Unit and its transformation into a modern, data-driven public health institution with functions comparable to leading international centres for disease control (CDC).
