Sentinel Site Surveillance Guidelines

Surveillance and notification goes hand in hand.

The notification system in Sri Lanka
is well established and functioning remarkably well. This provides us the basis for
control and prevention of any disease which has a potential to become a threat to the
health of the public. The list of notifiable diseases was updated several times in the
past. New additions were also made recently. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
(SARS) was added to the list of notifiable diseases in 2003. Chickenpox, Meningitis
and Mumps will be added in 2005................

Sri Lanka experienced the largest outbreak of Dengue Fever in 2004 with the highest
recorded mortality in the recent past. Consequently dengue prevention and control
activities were strengthened.
This document on clinical management of DF/DHF will assist clinicians in proper management of patients with the ultimate goal of preventing mortality due to this dreaded disease.
