| Food poisoning outbreak at
MOH, Maskeliya– Dickoya An outbreak of food poisoning was reported from Dickoya in the Maskeliya MOH area in Nuwara Eliya district on 18th February 2007. Around 300 persons were treated at Dickoya District Hospital for an acute illness with symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea with fifty patients receiving in-patient treatment. A prompt outbreak investigation was carried out by the district health team comprising of the Regional Epidemiologist, Medical Officer of Health (Maskeliya) and the Public Health team. Lunch packets distributed to attendees during an annual religious ceremony held that day at Fordyce Estate were identified as the probable source of infection. These lunch packets had been prepared
early that morning (2 - 6 a.m.) by a group of estate employees in a make-shift
kitchen in the factory premises and had been consumed in the afternoon
between 3 and 4 p.m. by those who attended the ceremony. The lunch packets
had contained samba rice, dried fish curry, fried potatoes, fried brinjals
and a curry of beans and lentils. Source of water used for cooking had
been from the main water line at the factory premises. The patients started
presenting with symptoms within 1 - 2 hrs of consuming their lunch. Samples
of lunch packets, water and clinical specimens have been sent to the Medical
Research Institute (MRI) for investigation.
