..Chief Epidemiologist's Message
I can still remember that this was one of the dreams Dr Rajan Rajasinghem had when he was serving in our team a few years ago. Then the former Epidemiologist Dr T A Kulatilake managed to develop a website for the Unit with outside assistance. Later, Dr Indira Samarawickrame who was one of our M.D. Postgraduate trainees developed this website of our own and now it has been further developed by Mr Premaratne Ratnasinghe, our computer programmer & Analyst and Madura Gunathilake.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this present website. The Epidemiology Unit is the premier disease surveillance Unit in the Ministry of Health Sri Lanka. Be it an outbreak of any disease occurring in any part of the country or any natural or man made disaster,..we are ready to act with responsibility to minimize the damage.

The aim of the Epidemiology Unit is to improve the health of the Sri Lankan population by.. collation, interpretation and provision of the best possible information on infectious diseases. This is achieved through surveillance and independent advice, epidemiological investigation, research and training.

In control and prevention of diseases, the Unit functions very closely with the Ministry of Health and other health service providers in the country and with organizations in other countries to ensure that up to date information is available to contribute to the effective control of infectious diseases.

We also take all possible precautionary action to prevent outbreaks of diseases through the national health system.

I hope the information available in this website will be useful to you and I look forward for your comments and suggesitions to further improve this web site.
