/ Hospital Information System In a move to improve disease information system in the country World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with Epidemiology Unit has initiated a project on Multi Disease Surveilllance / Hospital Information System in six selected hospitals in six districts. This computer based electronic information system was initiated in November 2005 at GH Ampara and GH Hambanthota. The system will soon be introduced to GH Karapitiya, GH Kalutara, BH Kalmunai and TH Batticoloa. This project aims to cover the shortcomings identified in the present health information system in the country such as poor timeliness, lack of information on outpatients, multiple reporting and incomplete data. WHO provides the funding and logistics for the project and the Epidemiology Unit will handle the implementation and monitoring aspects. New software and system hardware has been installed in selected hospitals and these systems would generate electronic versions of Bed Head Tickets, mid night census totals, patient summary reports, notification forms (H544), Weekly Return of Communicable Diseases (WRCD) and Morbidity Mortality Returns. In addition, the computer systems in these institutions will be linked to respective Regional Epidemiologists and also to the Epidemiology Unit to enhance and accelerate surveillance |
